Winneconne 4-K Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I enroll my child in 4-year-old kindergarten?

Statistics show children who attend 4-year-old kindergarten start school better prepared, with improved reading and math skills, as well as stronger vocabularies. Children also learn social and behavior management skills, like how to raise their hands, take turns and share the teacher's attention.

What kind of things will my child do and learn in 4-year-old kindergarten?

Our goal is to make the 4-K program as beneficial to students as possible, starting their school career off with a solid educational foundation. Most days will include:

  • Independent play time, daily warm up and work, and independent reading
  • Daily news, teaching desired behaviors and circle time
  • Recess and snack
  • Play-based activities, including science, technology (using iPads), music, language and reading, house and dress up, art, writing and ABCs, math games and culture

Spanish will be a weekly part of the curriculum, and students also will have the opportunity to visit the Norbert Rich School Forest, a new part of the Winneconne Community School District, to learn about the environment.

Morning and afternoon classes will have the same structure.

When does my child’s fourth birthday have to occur in order for him or her to participate?

A child must be four years old by Sept. 1 of the school year he or she will enter the four-year-old kindergarten program.
For example, Jane will be four years old on August 29, 2021. Jane’s mother can enroll her in the four-year-old kindergarten program for the 2021-2022 school year .

Are children who live in the Winneconne Community School District the only ones who can participate?

No. Our school district offers open enrollment, so the 4-K program is open to all children regardless of where they live. Where will the 4-K program be held? Children attending four-year-old kindergarten will attend Winneconne Elementary School.

What time does the 4-K program start, and are there morning and afternoon sessions?

Two morning sessions, 8 to 10:45 a.m., and two afternoon sessions, 12:25 to 3 p.m., will be available. Families may choose the session that works best for them, and we will do our best to accommodate their preferences. We recommend enrolling early.

Can my child ride the bus? Is it mandatory?

Bus service will be available for all students who meet the Winneconne Community School District busing guidelines (listed below). Students in four-year-old kindergarten will ride the bus with other elementary students, in the morning and afternoon, but two special bus routes will be added at 10:45 a.m. and 12:25 p.m. to drop off and pick up students. Families may choose to drop off and pick up students on their own.

Note that:

  • Any student living outside the Village of Winneconne may use the bus service.
  • Any student living in the Village of Winneconne, east of the bridge, may not use the bus service unless his or her family pays a fee ($100 per student, up to $200 maximum, per family).
  • A student who lives within the Village of Winneconne, west of the bridge, may use the bus service if his or her parent or guardian notifies Mrs. Cady.
  • There is an exception for any student living east of 9th Avenue and north of Main Street (the area behind the Piggly Wiggly).
    • These students may use the bus if Mrs. Cady is notified.
    • If these same students need to be bused to an alternate location, like a daycare center or babysitter’s house, then the fee would apply.
  • These parameters are subject to change based on student population.

How should I prepare my 4-year-old son or daughter to attend the 4-K program?

Please plan to attend one of the kindergarten open houses. Talk to your child about the fun things he or she will do and learn in school. Read to your child everyday, and enjoy books together.
